According to Ayurvedic Medicine, ghee lubricates every tissue and every cell in your body.

You probably didn’t know, but ghee also builds the immune system, which is called Ojas in Ayurveda.

I will explore the incredible benefits of ghee. I sincerely hope you find this article useful and helpful for living a healthier life.

Introduction to Ghee

What is GHEE?

Ghee is clarified butter – which has been used for thousands of years in Indian Cooking.

If you have been interested in Ayurveda or India for sometime, chances are you’ve seen it, heard about it, probably even tasted it.

Just to tell you how popular and common it is in India: You will find ghee in each and every household in India at all times. It’s that common!

How is ghee made?

Traditionally, ghee is made by simmering butter (in India, we fondly call this “malai” which floats on top of milk) to remove the water and milk solids. The result of this simmering is a pure, unadulterated golden-coloured liquid fat.

What if you don’t like the smell of GHEE?

If you don’t like the smell of GHEE (for some people it can be a bit overwhelming at first), then you can drink up oils.

Oils such as

  • Sesame oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Linseed or hemp seed oil
  • Olive oil

….. are very good options.

However, I can never say it enough:

Ghee is hands-down the best option. It has immense benefits.

For maximum benefits, you can drink ghee between 5 to 10 ml on an empty stomach.

What is Rasa?

Drinking ghee – clarified butter, first thing in the morning makes the nourishing juice called Rasa.

Rasa is the source of nutrition for every cell in the body.

It contains five elements which form the basis of Ayurveda:

  • Space
  • Air
  • Fire
  • Water
  • Earth

Good Rasa shows in a glowing and soft skin. It gives a healthy shine.

When Rasa is balanced we experience clear perception, faith, and love;
When Rasa is out of balance, we feel sad and confused.

Why drink ghee first thing in the morning?

When you wake up, your body is ready to make Rasa – fresh, nourishing juice for the body. Rasa then passes on the nourishment to the tissues. When all these tissues receive the oils or ghee, every cell of the body is cared for; the joints are lubricated, the hair becomes soft and silkier, the skin is smoother.

You can also, lubricate the 9 Holes in your body with Ghee.

Lubricating the 9 Holes in your body, keeps your organs more efficient. Read about it here: Holes in Human Body

My story (Gagori Mitra)

I had very dry skin, and during the cold season, the dryness worsened.  I tried all the products on the market for external applications, but these products helped me only temporarily. I did not realize it could be something internal. When I discovered Ayurveda, I started drinking 1 or 2 tablespoons of organic cow ghee. And the results came in soon enough: I feel different as my skin is no longer dry and my joints don’t make cracking or popping sounds.

The body has its own process and lubrication may happen between 1 and 6 six months into the treatment. Try drinking ghee for a month and share how did that change the way you feel.

Ghee with Lentils and Indian Bread

Traditionally, in an Indian household, a spoonful of ghee is consumed regularly, if not everyday, with Lentils (dal) and Indian Bread (roti/chapati).

It is a common practice in India to take 1 t-spoonful of ghee and smear it on a hot roti. And what’s really fascinating is to watch ghee melt on the hot steaming roti.

When not smeared on a roti, a spoonful of ghee is put into a bowl of hot dal (lentils).

This is how we consume ghee on a regular basis.

FAQs regarding Ghee

Can I drink water after taking ghee immediately in the morning, as I drink water when I wake up?

It is better to drink water first and after 10 minutes drink warm Ghee.

What’s the significance of consuming ghee in the morning?

Consuming Ghee in the morning has many benefits.

Since ghee is oily and sweet in nature, it is cooling to the body.

In addition to lubricating the joints, it helps draw toxins from the blood, as its oily nature attracts them. Since the colon is responsible for elimination, this process also aids in relieving constipation.

Ghee makes a good nourishing juice called rasa which helps in overall functioning of the body.

I have hyperacidity and take an antacid every morning. Can I still drink ghee?

Hyperacidity problem is because your liver is producing more acid than required. For hyperacidity, one needs to first change their diet and look into if one is feeling angry towards anything in particular about an aspect of their life. Interestingly, this can be the root cause of  your hyperacidity. Hyperacidity is curable in Ayurveda and you can go completely off antacids.

You can drink ghee on empty stomach as ghee has a sweet taste and sweet taste according to Ayurveda is cooling to the body.

So if you are absolutely unable to go off for any reason, then before having antacid, you can drink Ghee. However, drink a glass of plain water before consuming ghee.

Does drinking ghee in the morning increase weight?

Consuming a spoonful of warm ghee in the morning will not lead to weight gain. Weight gain is more influenced by what is consumed throughout the day, particularly sweets. There is a strong link between food and weight. When someone is emotionally distressed and unable to express it, they may turn to overeating as a way to suppress their feelings. This emotional eating often triggers an increase in body weight.

Can I drink buffalo ghee if I am not able to get Cow ghee?

Buffalo ghee is difficult to digest and it is heavy on the digestive system. You can have buffalo ghee but maybe only once a week.

Ayurveda generally favours cow ghee for its lighter quality and ease of digestion. It’s considered sattvic (pure, promoting clarity), whereas buffalo ghee is seen as tamasik (heavier, promoting dullness). However, in colder climates or for those with higher energy needs, buffalo ghee can be beneficial due to its higher fat content.

Why are people drinking ghee in the morning?

You might think that’s a little odd if you’re accustomed to it just being slathered on toast, but to add ghee on an empty stomach is a tradition that’s older than old in Ayurveda. The concept is that it “heats” up the digestive tract and awakens the digestive fire (Agni). Some people say it helps them with regularity, sustaining energy, and even the glow of their skin.

How to take ghee on an empty stomach?

If you are thinking about how to take ghee, then it is simply warm. You don’t want to eat cold, solid ghee out of the jar.

  • Use approximately 1 teaspoon of your finest, grass-fed ghee.
  • Keep going until it’s liquid.
  • Drink it this way, or combine it with a small cup of warm water.

Pro tip: Wait 30 minutes before eating breakfast (or at least having your morning coffee) to let it work its magic.

How to eat ghee on empty stomach if I don’t like the taste?

If you find that drinking it straight is too much, here are some ways how to eat ghee on empty stomach without side effects:

  • The “Warm Water” Method: Mix with half a glass of warm water and drink it as if it were a tea.
  • Bulletproof Style: Ghee is consumed by a lot of people in the morning along with their coffee or tea. This is a common way to have the good fats without that “oily” feeling.

What is the best way how to consume ghee on empty stomach?

As with the best things, consistency is important. Here is an easy schedule for how to consume ghee:

  • Wake up and drink a small glass of plain warm water.
  • Follow with 5–10ml (1–2tsp) of liquid ghee.
  • Stay in motion — some light stretching or walking can aid the “lubrication” process.
  • Refrain from drinking cold beverages for at least 1 hour.

Are there any side effects to having ghee in the morning?

Although many people have found it helpful, we are all different. If you have a sensitive gallbladder or high cholesterol, for example, it’s worth having a chat with your GP before making it part of your daily routine. Also, start small! If you are new to it, begin with about half a teaspoon and then pay attention to how your stomach feels.
