In the past decade, Ayurveda study has also gained traction in the West. There has been growing interest among students, health and wellness lovers, and even tourists looking to study Ayurvedic medicine from an authentic source.

If you’ve ever asked yourself, “How can I learn Ayurveda?” or you have just been interested in exploring this ancient system of medicine, this guide will help you. You will learn how to study Ayurveda at home, and we will discuss the best books on Ayurveda, and different Ayurveda courses and universities/training courses in India.

Let’s dive into the section on self-study.

Studying Ayurveda in India Through Self-Study:  A Modern Learner’s Approach

Ayurveda has a long history of attracting those who want to find out what health is really about, beyond treating illnesses. Though ‘guru-kula’ education still exists alongside many traditional degree programs, the majority of people looking to start their journey into Ayurveda today, especially those coming from outside of India (i.e., international students, wellness professionals or spiritual seekers), will most likely discover that the self-paced approach to online self-study offers them their best chance of successfully learning about this ancient, holistic health care system.

As a result of the digital revolution and the development of many reputable institutions offering authentic education in Ayurveda online, the self-study approach to Ayurveda no longer involves only reading the ancient texts. Now, students can integrate the traditional teachings of Ayurveda with some modern tools that allow them to study independently and at their own pace, while remaining grounded in the time-honoured teachings.

Where to Start Your India Ayurveda Self-Study Journey

The fundamental concepts of Ayurveda, which form the basis of the system, include Tridosha (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), Panchamahabhuta (five elements), Agni (digestive fire), and Prakriti (body constitution). Therefore, when starting your self-study journey in Ayurveda, it is best to begin with some of the introductory texts, such as summaries of the “Charaka Samhita,” commentary on the “Ashtanga Hridayam,” and basic Ayurveda manuals written by experienced practitioners, to provide you with a foundation for your study of Ayurveda.

Now, many Ayurveda schools and healing centres in India have started to offer online self-paced courses, hosted video-recorded lectures, and digital study materials that students can access at their convenience. Courses on Ayurveda are designed to assist learners in building an organised foundation without being subject to rigid timelines or exam stress.

Self-Study & Books

The first and most genuine manner to begin your Ayurveda examine is through self-study. For in-depth know-how, pass directly to the supply. If you’re questioning the way to study Ayurveda at domestic, start with the unique Sanskrit texts that shape the muse of Ayurvedic philosophy.

Classic Ayurveda books, along with the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya, are vital for information on the basics of this ancient technological know-how. These texts provide an explanation for Ayurvedic records, sickness management, doshas, and daily practices that stabilize mind, body, and spirit. Free English translations of those texts are available online for novices.

To put it simply, analyzing historic Ayurveda books gives you access to undying fitness awareness that specializes in stability, herbal remedies, and prevention in preference to therapy. They cover Ayurvedic food regimen, way of life, and natural treatments that continue to be relevant even nowadays.

Combining Theory with Practical Experience

Observational learning is another element of a person’s journey into Ayurveda, and unequivocally the most significant part of learning Ayurveda, particularly when done through the avenue of self-learning. Visiting ayurvedic health clinics in India, attending short-term workshops on ayurvedic teachings, and/or taking part in wellness retreats, all provide excellent opportunities to have real-time exposure to diagnosis, herbal formulation, panchakarma therapy, and lifestyle-related recommendations, from an ayurvedic perspective.

Self-study is typically viewed as learning independently and as a solitary activity. While that’s a general premise of self-study, it does not prevent a learner from joining ayurvedic community forums or using mentors through live group discussions to ask questions that will improve their understanding of ayurvedic principles and practices.

Mentorship of an Ayurvedic Practitioner

If you are more advanced, shadowing an Ayurveda Vaidya (seasoned Ayurvedic doctor) is also a great option to hone your skills.

Learning from an Ayurvedic doctor’s experience is another way to build practical training. These days, you will also find training centers and institutions run by trained Vaidyas.

Study Ayurveda

Professional Degree in Ayurveda

Long-time practitioners of Ayurveda often suggest formal training is the best way to begin its study.

Many other Ayurvedic colleges in India offer long and short-term courses. These include diploma courses, degree courses as well as Certificate courses in Ayurvedic Science.

For Indians, the most traditional route for Ayurvedic studies is to go for a Bachelor’s of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery (BAMS). Other colleges also offer supporting degrees. These range from pre-Ayurvedic courses to certificate courses in Ayurvedic medicine.

For this degree program, you will have to give the All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Entrance Exam. You must have studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology (and sometimes, Sanskrit) in your 12th grade.

If you don’t have a couple of months to spare, short-term courses in Ayurveda at a Professional Ayurveda School are your best bet
