Panchamahabhuta

Pancha meaning 5, Maha meaning big, Bhuta meaning elements.

So Panchamahabhuta is the five big elements of the universe that we can see and feel.

These elements are the structural entity of the universe.

The elements are:

  • Aakash
  • Vayu
  • Agni
  • Jala
  • Prithvi

The English translations of these elements are:

  • Space or ether
  • Air
  • Fire
  • Water
  • Earth

But the English translation does not give the true meaning of the Sanskrit words. The Sanskrit words have much deeper and bigger meaning. According to Ayurveda these elements are translated as Aakash – non-resistance, Vayu – movement and direction, Agni –transformation/ light and heat, Jala – liquid/ fluid and cohesion, cohesion meaning binding or sticking together Prithvi – Solid and stable.
